AND FREEDOM FOR . . . SOME
RECENT LETTERS by Lewis E. Wertz (Dec. 17) and Francis B. Rogers (Dec. 18) offer a chilling defense of so-called "Christian-conservative" principles. I can only imagine the overwhelming sense of pride and approval they must have felt as they witnessed the onslaught of intolerance, bigotry and hatred perpetuated during last summer's Republican National Convention.Wertz claims that "the fight for conservative principles is the core of individual freedom and liberty." This is simply untrue. Conservatives would like nothing better than to impose their own brand of morality onto everyone else.
I doubt that a woman's right to choose what to do with her body or a homosexual's right to serve his or her own country in the armed forces fits into Wertz's vision of "individual freedom and liberty."
Once again, we have seen how self-professed "Christians" wrap themselves in their own interpretation of the Bible to justify their right-wing politics. ALAN GLICK BLACKSBURG
