SKI SEASON ON THE SKIDS
Warm temperatures and rains have eroded the snow base at most ski resorts in Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. Several have had to close as they await better treatment from the weather. In Virginia, skiing came to a halt last week at Bryce Resort and The Homestead. North Carolina's Appalachian Ski Mountain, Cataloochee, Fairfield-Sapphire, Hound Ears, Scaly Mountain and Ski Beech weren't operating at week's end, and Sugar Mountain was advising skiers to call before coming.
West Virginia resorts were suffering less, but their snow base has dwindled. Snowshoe-Silver Creek was reporting a 10-to-38-inch base, with 43 slopes operating, down five from a late-December count. Timberline, near Davis, W.Va., had the deepest snow, 20 to 48 inches on 11 slopes.
Snowshoe had predicted that rain would change to snow Saturday night with an accumulation of 6 inches expected by Monday.
