ANNA ANGLING RATED EXCELLENT
Recent warm weather has brought fishermen out at Lake Anna, and many have gone home happy.Anna Point Marina has rated the striped bass, largemouth bass, white perch and channel catfish action as excellent, calling it the best of the winter season.
One of the top catches was an 8-pound, 4-ounce largemouth bass taken on a live herring by Richard Williams of Louisa.
The warming trend has moved the largemouth into the shallows, where Robert Franklin of Louisa took a 7-pound, 9-ounce fish while casting a Rebel lure along the bank in 3 feet of water.
The stripers, weighing up to 13 pounds, have been feeding in areas where there is a winter die-off of threadfin shad. Fishermen are using small lures, such as bucktails, 4-inch Sassy Shads and Hopkins Spoons to mimic the fluttering baitfish.
Sea gulls often pinpoint the striper-action spots. Catfish weighing 3 to 6 pounds frequently are found feeding with the stripers.
The better white perch weigh nearly a pound are are found around the mouth of major creeks.
