NATHANIEL LEHMANN, FORMER RAILROAD MAN, DIES AT AGE 97
Nathaniel R. Lehmann, a self-made man who rose from clerk to assistant vice president at Norfolk and Western Railway, died Sunday at a local nursing home. He was 97.Lehmann was hired as an NW record clerk in October 1912. His interest in freight rates earned him a steady string of promotions, including one to assistant freight traffic manager in 1947.
In 1949, Lehmann became the railroad's assistant vice president for traffic - a position he held until he retired in December 1960.
Lehmann was a former director of the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke, a member of the Board of Stewards of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church and a member of the Roanoke Valley Bird Club.
The Botetourt County native was known by his friends as "Nat." He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Yost Lehmann, and is survived by one sister, Chrystella Lehmann of Cardinal.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
