WALSH'S REAL TARGET IS RONALD REAGAN

WHY IS Lawrence Walsh so consumed in Iran-Contra? As special prosecutor, he has served longer than any independent counsel - longer than all but one attorney general in American history. This circus he conducts is to the tune of $35 million.

I would contend that his exercise of the law reveals a political agenda. People should remember that only four days before the presidential election, Walsh had added new charges against former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger that would contradict George Bush's contention that he was "out of the loop" as vice president.

You may think that implicating Bush in the scandal is the reason for Walsh's zest and pernickety in the case. In reality, however, the real prize for the special prosecutor - and the political left he is associated with - is to position himself to prosecute Ronald Reagan. He will stop at nothing to rob our former president of his rightful place in American history.

We can be thankful. After Jan. 20, we will no longer have to endure Lawrence Walsh or other special prosecutors for at least the next four years. MICHAEL BLEVINS ROANOKE
