PATRIOTISM TOO QUICKLY QUESTIONED
ED BAKER'S letter to the editor (Jan. 7) both shocked and saddened me. I have the utmost respect for this nation's veterans, and I do not question their patriotism. But neither do I question the patriotism of those who chose not to serve in the Vietnam war, especially those who stayed out of the war without breaking the law or pulling strings like those Vice President Dan Quayle pulled.I rejoiced when our nation elected as our armed forces' new commander in chief a man who considers the morality and justice of a war before he commits himself to it.
Among those presidents who were not warriors were Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Does anyone want to question their patriotism? ANDREA MORRIS SALEM
