2 MINERS KILLED, 2 HURT IN TENN. MINE COLLAPSE

Two miners were killed, another was injured and a fourth person was injured and trapped for 10 hours Monday when a coal mine caved in, authorities said.

Eight others escaped uninjured when Whitwell Mine 30, in a remote area 90 miles southeast of Nashville, gave way late Monday morning. The collapse was caused by a shifting rock, said Kirby Smith, a federal mine inspector.

The mine is operated by JEN, Inc., said Rodney Brown of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration in Arlington, Va.
