GOVERNOR ENDORSES PLAN
Gov. Douglas Wilder has given his support to recommendations made by the Governor's Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics in such areas as gender equity, financial control and academic accountability."Although these steps are long overdue, our commitment to making them puts Virginia on the cutting edge in the area of athletic reform," Wilder said Tuesday in a news release.
A 15-member group formed by Wilder in May made dozens of recommendations in a 35-page report made public Oct. 13. The group stressed greater involvement by school presidents in college athletics, including booster groups and strict adherence to Title IX, the law that guarantees women equal opportunities in sports.
Wilder made mention of recent news reports that the University of Virginia had increased the pay of women's basketball coach Debbie Ryan to the level of her male counterpart, Jeff Jones. Ryan is a member of the commission.
