CONTRACTOR WON'T SEEK NOMINATION TO ASSEMBLY

Salem contractor Sam Lionberger Jr. said Tuesday he won't seek the Republican nomination for the House of Delegates, leaving Salem lawyer Morgan Griffith as the sole announced GOP contender.

Lionberger, president of Lionberger Construction Co., had talked about running, but said in a statement he could not afford to take the time away from his business.

"My time commitments to the family business had to receive first priority," Lionberger said. "I do look forward to the possibility of seeking public office at some future time should the opportunity present itself."

So far, no Democrats have formally declared for the seat that Del. Steve Agee will be giving up to seek the Republican nomination for attorney general, although Salem City Councilman Howard Packett, former Roanoke County Supervisor Lee Garrett and Salem lawyer Ross Hart all have expressed interest in running.

The district covers Salem, much of Southwest Roanoke County and eastern Montgomery County.
