WYTHE GIVING $2,000 TO STUDY FOR IVANHOE
Ivanhoe will get $2,000 from Wythe County for part of a $15,000 engineering study aimed at bringing septic field service to the community. The county Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to pay that much toward the study by Anderson & Associates. The Ivanhoe Civic League and Mountain Shelter Inc. will provide $5,000, much of it in volunteer work.
Jeff London of Mountain Shelter told the supervisors that the Virginia Water Project had agreed to provide another $5,000 but, if the county would donate $2,000, it would raise that to $8,000 - enough to cover the project.
Ivanhoe had secured a housing improvements grant several years ago but found that indoor plumbing could not be added in many places because the soil would not accommodate septic fields for drainage.
Community residents have looked into a central sewage system that would cost less than a conventional one. The engineering study would determine a location, costs and other information necessary to start seeking construction funds.
The study will be carried out this winter. The system would serve 200 to 300 households, London said.
The supervisors have a policy of not making money decisions until they have time to study the requests, but Supervisor Andy Kegley moved that the policy be set aside on this request because a delay would have held up the Virginia Water Project money for at least three months. Its board meets quarterly and its next meeting would come before the supervisors meet again.
