BULLDOGS UNSEAT WARRIORS

Forward Vincent Eggleston scored 27 points as Martinsville edged Magna Vista 72-70 Tuesday night at Ridgeway, handing the Warriors their first loss of the Piedmont District season.

The Bulldogs (9-1 overall, 7-1 district) led virtually all the way, building their advantage to 10 points in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors (7-2, 7-1) refused to go easily, rallying to 71-70 on Evan Penn's 3-pointer with two seconds left. Magna Vista immediately fouled Martinsville's Todd Johnson on the inbounds pass. Johnson hit one of two free throws to make it a two-point game before Rodney Redd's desperation heave at the buzzer came up short.

Maurice Spencer had 16 points and Mike Martin 11 for the Bulldogs.

Penn paced Magna Vista with 22 points. Rodney Redd added 18 points and Marcus Toney 16. \

Tuesday's other games

\ Tunstall 93, Bassett 80: At Tunstall, Khris Law gunned in 39 points and Tarrance Carter added 23 as the Trojans (6-5, 4-4) won a wild Piedmont District affair.

The teams combined for 65 points in the fourth quarter.

Art Wade pumped in 31 points for Bassett (2-8, 2-6), Darryle Hand had 16 and Chris Hagwood 14. \

Chatham 57, Dan River 53: At Chatham, Rodney Williams got Chatham into overtime, then helped the Cavaliers win a Piedmont District game.

Dan River's Brian Gunn scored to give his team a 50-49 lead with about a minute left in the game; it was Dan River's first lead of the fourth quarter. Chatham missed with about 24 seconds left.

But on a Dan River inbounds play, Williams stole the ball and was fouled with five seconds left. He made both free throws, but a lane violation nullified the second shot and Dan River's desperation miss forced overtime.

Chatham (4-6, 4-4) trailed by four at halftime but outscored Dan River (4-7, 3-5) 14-4 in the third quarter, getting a combined 12 points from Wright and LaVelton Pope.

Ben Wright finished with 20 points and Pope 15 for Chatham. Chris Wilson had 16, Dennis Williams 14 and Gunn 12 for the Wildcats. \

Laurel Park 91, Gretna 63: At Gretna, Lonzey Robertson led four players in double figures as the undefeated Lancers dumped the Hawks in a Piedmont District game.

Chauncey Strange had 16 points, Warwick Scott 12 and Ronnie Jackson 11 for Laurel Park (10-8, 8-0).

Jeff Moon scored 18 and William Merritt and Lamont Hubbard added 10 each for Gretna (1-9, 1-7), which has missed 25 of 41 free throws in the past two games. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 74, Patrick County 58: At Collinsville, Thad Wade made eight of 10 shots from the field and finished with 20 points, five assists and three steals to power the Cavaliers to a Piedmont District win.

Scott Chitwood added 18 points and Lemuel Jones 12 for Fieldale-Collinsville (6-4, 4-4).

Mike Wood led the Cougars (1-8, 0-8) with 16 points and Chris Reynolds had 11. \

Fort Chiswell 100, Auburn 98: At Riner, B.W. Hill tossed in 29 points and Steve Widner added 24 as the Pioneers toppled Auburn in double overtime in a Mountain Empire District game.

Widner hit five straight 3-pointers and finished 5-for-6 from long range. Jody Burnett scored 18 and Shane Carico 11 for Fort Chiswell (7-2, 5-2).

Terry Millirons had 27 points, Jon Reed 20, Andy Johnson 17 and Bradley Hudgins 16 for the Eagles (6-4, 4-3), who have lost three straight.

Auburn made 26 of 45 free throws; Fort Chiswell converted 13 of 32.

\ Bland 63, Rocky Gap 55: At Bland, the Rockets (4-4, 3-4) made eight of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter and held off the Eagles (0-8, 0-7) in a close Mountain Empire District game.

After trailing 10-6, Rocky Gap led by eight points in the second quarter after making four consecutive 3-pointers to early in the quarter. Bland recovered and led 31-28 at halftime.

Kevin King's 16 points led Bland. Jes Selfe and Chris Tickle added 12 points each and Brad Harden had 10 points. Selfe had 11 rebounds, and King made five steals.

Joe Cromer led Rocky Gap with 13 points, Eric Faulkner and Richard Worley had 11 each, and Frank Nunley added 10. \

Glenvar 54, Bath County 50: Brad Melton had 10 points and 16 rebounds as host Glenvar outlasted Bath County in a Pioneer District game.

Glenvar (6-3, 3-0) led by two late in the game when Wes Jones was fouled intentionally. He made both free throws, and Melton scored on the ensuing possession to give Glenvar a six-point cushion.

Matt Shearad had 15 for Bath County (5-6, 1-1) and Craig Phillips 11.

\ Parry McCluer 61, Craig County 41: At Buena Vista, Jason Baker's 12 points paced the Fighting Blues, who led all the way in the Pioneer District romp. Parry McCluer (6-1, 2-1) led 15-8 after one quarter and never looked back. Robby Huffman led the Rockets (5-5, 0-2) with 23 points. \

James River 77, Highland 55: At Buchanan, Lloyd Moore had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Knights to a Pioneer District victory over Highland. Troy Thompson added 15 points and Jody Steger had 13 for James River (3-8, 2-1). Highland (2-5, 0-3) got 11 points from Bradley Hull, 10 from John Hull and 10 from Tracy Hiner. \

Chilhowie 68, Castlewood 67: At Castlewood, Tim Polk's basket from inside the lane with four seconds remaining game the Warriors a victory over the Blue Devils in a Hogoheegee District game. Polk finished with 17 points, and Shane Olinger had 22 for Chilhowie (5-4, 2-3). O.J. Williams scored 37 points in leading Castlewood. \

Lebanon 82, Rural Retreat 54: At Rural Retreat, Lebanon's Brian Summers and Aaron Fuller combined for 43 points as the Pioneers ripped Rural Retreat in a Hogoheegee District game.

Summers was 4-for-5 from three-point range, all of his bonus shots coming in the second quarter when Lebanon fattened a four-point lead to 20 at halftime.

Rusty Crigger and Stephen Pratt each had 11 points for Rural Retreat (2-6, 2-3). \

George Wythe 72, PH-Glade Spring 48: At Wytheville, Every Maroons player scored against the Rebels in a game between Hogoheegee District teams. Aaron Black led the Maroons (5-4) with 13 points, Tracy Brown had 12 and Andre Cook added 10. \

Alleghany 70, Christiansburg 48: At Covington, the undefeated Mountaineers won their ninth in a row by defeating the Demons in a non-district game.

For Alleghany, Todd Wheatley had 11 rebounds and 13 points; Tommy Crawford came off the bench to score 10 points; Michael Hunter had 11 points, all in the first half; and Jermaine Winston added 10 points. \

Stuarts Draft 82, Rockbridge County 67: At Stuarts Draft, Tim Wilson scored 29 points as Stuarts Draft rolled past Rockbridge County in a non-district game. Marty Early led Rockbridge (6-4) with 17 points. \

John Battle 57, Marion 48: At Bristol, the Trojans used 17-10 second quarter and a 14-8 third quarter to pull away from the Scarlet Hurricane in a Highlands District game. \
