EX-GALAX OFFICIAL W.G. ANDREWS DIES

Walter Glen Andrews, who became Galax's town manager in 1947 and retired as its city manager 23 years later, died Tuesday. He was 101.

Andrews, born in Grayson County in 1891, served four years on the town's council during the Great Depression years and was elected to a two-year term as mayor in 1940.

He witnessed Galax's population double to around 5,000 through annexations from 1949 to 1952. The town became a city two years later.

"There's one thing about being city manager," Andrews once said. "You never have a dull moment. There's something happening all the time."

The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Galax. Arrangements are by the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home.
