COUNCILMAN JOHN ROLLER RESIGNS FOR HEALTH REASONS

After 37 years on the Pearisburg Town Council, Councilman John Roller has reluctantly called it quits.

Roller resigned Tuesday night, telling the council he regretted leaving, but had to do so for health reasons.

"John has been a wonderful councilman. We hate to see him leave," said Mayor Clarence Taylor. "He's been a hard worker and has done a lot of things for the town of Pearisburg. I just cannot say enough good things about him."

Roller has been a well known personality not only around Pearisburg but also at Virginia Tech's Cassell Coliseum. Fans expect to see him at each basketball game waving his yellow sweater behind the basket when opposing team members try to sink a free-throw shot.

Roller will be replaced on the Town Council by Jack Davis, who has served for the last three years on the town's Board of Zoning Appeals. He will fill out the term that expires June 30, 1994. Davis, a Virginia Tech employee who works at the university's Corporate Research Center, had run unsuccessfully for Town Council in 1990.
