LETTERMAN LEAVING FOR SHOW OPPOSITE LENO
David Letterman, star of NBC's "Late Night With David Letterman," apparently will be moving to CBS with a salary of $14 million a year, leaving rival Jay Leno secure as host of "The Tonight Show."A source close to the networks' negotiations on Wednesday confirmed that Letterman would move to CBS. NBC Entertainment President Warren Littlefield is expected to make the formal announcement, with Leno at his side, today.
CBS officials would neither confirm nor deny the report, but the network is expected to schedule a news conference of its own today.
CBS has been courting Letterman ever since NBC passed him over in favor of Leno as Johnny Carson's successor.
NBC, fighting equally hard to hold him, had until this week to match or top CBS's salary offer and give Letterman the 11:35 p.m. time slot he had demanded and received from CBS.
