WYTHE BOARD APPROVES 911 SYSTEM
The Wythe County Board of Supervisors has approved the start-up of an 911 emergency telephone system in the county. The board made the decision Monday night, after considering the matter for several months.
To help cover the costs of the system, a $1.50 monthly charge will be added to each Wythe County telephone bill starting in about three months. It will take about three years for roads to be named and signs installed before the system can be put into use.
The town of Wytheville also is working on such a system, and plans to start it by the end of 1993. Wythe County Sheriff Wayne Pike told the supervisors it would be cheaper and more efficient to have one central dispatch handle emergency calls, independent of his department or the town police.
