PORTRAYAL OF ORGANIZER MOTHER JONES PLANNED
Community organizer Karen Varaunch will portray labor organizer Mother Jones on Monday at 3 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. at Emory & Henry College. She will speak and then answer questions in the role of the feisty union organizer, whose real name was Mary Harris Jones. Jones died in 1930 shortly after her 100th birthday, and had been active in United Mine Workers organizing efforts.
She re-emerged as a folk hero to student activists of the 1960s, and a magazine bearing her name was founded.
Varaunch has portrayed Jones for a variety of civic and educational groups.
