OBIT WILLIAMS, MERVIN DEWEY

WILLIAMS, Mervin Dewey, 94, of Pembroke, died Monday, January 11, 1993, at his home following a long illness. Born in Pembroke, on September 7, 1898, he was a son of the late John Floyd and Anna Draper Williams. Mr. Williams served his community as a funeral director with Williams-Jamison Funeral Home for over 30 years and as a merchant with the J. F. Williams Co. and Williams Department Store for most of his life. He was a faithful and devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Pembroke where he served as Men's Bible Class teacher for over 50 years. "Shorty" as he was affectionately known in his family and community and was an alumnus of Randolph-Macon Academy and College and Smithfield-Massey Business College. He was a charter member of the Pembroke Ruritan Club and for over 60 years, a member of Castle Rock Lodge No. 334 A.F. & A.M. in Pembroke serving as Master in 1933. Surviving are his wife, Eula Mae Jamison Williams; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne Maynard and John Randolph of Williamsburg, Va, and Karen and Dan Hopper of Durango, Colo.; four grandchildren, Katherine Witherspoon, John H. Randolph Jr., Daniel E. Hopper, and Laurel Hopper. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 16, 1993, at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church, Pembroke, with the Rev. Lowell Stovall and the Rev. Raymond S. Kelley officiating. Burial will be in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Williams-Jamison-Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, January 15, 1993. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund of Pembroke, or the charity of choice.
