OBIT ANDREWS, WALTER GLEN SR.
ANDREWS, Walter Glen Sr., 101, of Galax, passed away Tuesday in the Twin
County Community Hospital. His residence was on 302 Poplar Street in Galax. He
was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Bagwell Andrews. Mr. Andrews was born
in Grayson County, Va. on November 23, 1891, where he later would teach school
until attending business college in Knoxville, Tenn. After that, he worked for
various coal companies until joining the U. S. Navy in 1918. He was a World
War I veteran. Mr. Andrews became Galax's town manager in 1947, after four
years on council and having served two years as mayor. He retired as city
manager in 1970. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and
served in several church offices. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club
and a sixty year member of the Oldtown Masonic Lodge and Shrine Club. He is
survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jody and Bill McCarter, Galax; sons and
daughters-in-law, W. G. and Fern Andrews, Wytheville and Linton and Sue
Andrews, Independence; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be held
Friday, 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ken Caraway
officiating. Burial will be in the Felts Cemetery. The family will receive
friends tonight at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home from 7 to 9. Flowers are
appreciated or donations may be made to either the Galax Volunteer Fire
Department or the First United Methodist Church in Galax.
