NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS ROLAND L. TOMPKINS, son of Marrietta and Moody K. Keener Jr. of 1743 Stonemill Drive, Salem, recently received a letter of commendation.Tompkins was cited for superior performance while assigned with Fleet Logistics Support Squadron-54, Naval Air Station, New Orleans.
Tompkins graduated from Glenvar High School in 1977.
\ NAVY AIRMAN RECRUIT RUSSELL D. HUGGETT, son of Diann M. Huggett of Roanoke, recently arrived off the coast of Somalia aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk to help with the relief effort Operation Restore Hope.
Huggett is a 1991 graduate of Salem High School.
\ LANCE CPL. JAMES M. WRIGHT, son of Frances L. and James M. Wright Sr. of 101 Giles Ave., Vinton, recently left on a six-month tour of duty to the Western Pacific with the 2nd Marine Regiment, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
The battalion will be based in Okinawa, Japan, while conducting short training exercises in other areas in the region.
Wright is a 1988 graduate of William Byrd High School.
\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS JAY L. BROWN, son of Josie E. Brown of 2212 Ridgefield St. N.E., recently reported for duty aboard the tank landing ship USS Cayuga, based in Long Beach, Calif.
Brown is a 1990 graduate of Franklin County High School.
