RELEVANCE IN ROANOKE: "In the Presence," a play by Sallie Bingham, will open the Norfolk Southern Festival of New Works at Mill Mountain Theatre tonight and will continue through Jan. 24.

The festival, in Theatre B of Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, also will include "Partial Objects," a fantasy/comedy from Sherry Kramer. It will run Jan. 29 through Feb. 7.

Bingham's work, which won the theater's 1992 New Play Competition, looks at the modern conflict between self-fulfillment and family values.

Tickets are $8 to $11. Show time is 7:30 p.m Tuesdays through Thursdays, 8 on Fridays and Saturdays. Matinees are at 2 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Call 342-5740 for reservations.\ \ FIGARO'S RETURN: Nicholas Loren, a baritone who won raves for his performance in Opera Roanoke's production of "The Barber of Seville," will present a solo recital Sunday afternoon at 4 at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church in Roanoke.

The program will include arias from Verdi's "Rigoletto" and Thomas's "Hamlet," songs by George and Ira Gershwin and more. Judith Clark will accompany Loren on piano.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students. Call 982-2742.\ \ SWING THING: Celebrated jazz composer David Baker tonight will join Victoria Bond, the Audubon Quartet and violinist Joe Kennedy Jr. for "January Jazz," an Artsounds event.

It's sponsored by the Roanoke Symphony, Virginia Tech and MidAtlantic Arts Foundation.

Baker has won a Pulitzer Prize in composition as well as a Grammy Award. The program, at Olin Hall of Roanoke College, will begin with a reception at 6:30, a gallery exhibit and tour at 7:15 and the concert at 8.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Marionette Shaw Sprauve Memorial Music Scholarship Fund, established by the Friends of the Roanoke Symphony.\ \ SWING THING 2: "Peter Pan," a road show from National Touring Musicals of New York, comes to Burruss Hall Auditorium at Virginia Tech on Thursday night. The curtain rises at 7:30. Tickets are $16 for the general public, $8 for children 12 and under.

The concert is sponsored by the Rocky Mount Lions Club.\ \ "TWILIGHT" TIME: The Roanoke Ballet Theatre will present "Twilight," a collection of 10 dance pieces choreographed by artistic directors Mark and Leslie Fields, on Wednesday night at 8 at Sale Theatre of Ferrum College.

James, an associate professor of voice at Radford, has performed with the New York City Opera, the Chicago Lyric, Santa Fe and Houston Grand Opera, among others. She will be accompanied by violinist Linda Plaut and pianist Caryl Conger.
