New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden bruised his chest and forehead in an automobile accident in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was treated at a hospital and released.

\ Billy Sample, a former major-leaguer from Salem, Va., will be the No. 2 announcer on California Angels games. Sample, 37, signed a three-year contract with radio station KMPC this week. He will work with Bob Starr. In addition to working with ESPN and CBS, Sample broadcast Braves games on radio and television.
