Hanson PLC said Thursday its Hanson Overseas B.V. subsidiary has sold an aggregate of $1.25 billion of notes, guaranteed by Hanson PLC, in a U.S. debt offering. Hanson is the British owner of Grove Worldwide Co. in Salem and MW Manufacturing Inc. of Rocky Mount. Proceeds will be used to repay short-term debt.

Brendle's Inc., an Elkin, N.C.-based discount retailer with stores in the Roanoke Valley, on Thursday announced a restructuring that it said reflects a change in philosophy from a financial-oriented management to a "back to basics retail" style, led by the people who led Brendle's during the profitable 1970s and 1980s. Douglas D. Brendle was renamed chairman of the board and chief executive officer, William F. Cosby is president and chief operating officer, and S. Floyd Brendle is executive vice-president.
