TEACHERS' UNION WANTS SCHOOL VIOLENCE CURBED
The nation's largest teachers' union called Thursday for a coordinated effort by federal, state and local governments to combat growing violence in the nation's schools.Citing Justice Department statistics from 1991 showing that each day about 100,000 of the nation's 45 million students bring guns to school, Keith Geiger, president of the National Education Association, called on the incoming Clinton administration to enforce fully a law that makes it a federal crime to carry firearms onto school property.
Jack Killorin, chief of public affairs of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, said the law dealt with adult offenders in or near school property and that his agency meets regularly with local law enforcement agencies that in turn work with local schools.
