OBIT-LOYD, THELMA SPESSARD

LOYD, Thelma Spessard, 93, of Roanoke, died in the Raleigh Court Health Care Center early Thursday morning, January 14, 1993. She was a member of the D.A.R., General James Breckinridge Chapter, the Windsor Hills Garden Club, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Law Wives, Girl Scouts, Thursday Morning Music Club, was a national registered parliamentarian and a lifetime flower show judge. She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. Tracy Loyd; one son, Joseph Reid Holcomb; two brothers, Clarence Spessard, Cecil Spessard; two sisters, Edith Stevens, Ruth Redden. She was born in West Virginia, a daughter of Jacob W. and Lucille Richardson Spessard. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Archer C. Holcomb Jr., and Sarah Belle Holcomb, Salem; brother, Roy C. Spessard, Indialantic, Fla.; two sisters, Dorothy Coats, Huntington, W.Va., Jean Zeller, Louisville, Ky.; grandson, Archer C. Holcomb III, Carlsbad, Calif.; great-granddaughter, Noelle Holcomb, Fullerton, Calif. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's South Chapel 11 a.m. Saturday by the Rev. Robert Smith and the Rev. J. M. ("Jess") Bratton. Entombment will be in Sherwood Abbey. The family suggests memorials be made to her favorite charity, Nature Camp, Rt. 1 Box 181, Vesuvius, VA 24483. Friends may call at Oakey's South Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
