UNION TAKES JOY RANCH KIDS SHOPPING
Christmas may be past, but its spirit still can be found in the Women's Committee of Local 2069 of the United Auto Workers. The organization will treat 38 residents of Joy Ranch home for children in Carroll County to a day of shopping and partying this morning.
Using money it has raised through raffles, a crafts show and even the sale of candy bars, the UAW Women's Committee will give each of the young people - ranging in age from 5 to 19 - $25 to spend while shopping at the Pulaski Wal-Mart.
The group then will move to the union hall at Dublin for pizza, ice cream and cake. Little Caesar's and Domino's are giving the group a discount on the pizza, and Volvo-GM Heavy Truck Corp. is providing the ice cream and cake.
Doris Correll, financial secretary of the union local, and Marie Gravley headed the effort by the Women's Committee to arrange the post-Christmas activities.
Correll said the group had wanted to do something for the youngsters at Joy Ranch before Christmas but everybody got too busy. It made a small donation to Joy Ranch last year, but went all-out this year to raise enough money for some more ambitious activities.
"We've never raised this much," Correll said.
