U.S. bituminous coal production for the year ending Jan. 2 was 981.5 million tons, or nearly 1 percent less than the 990.3 million tons mined in 1991, the U.S. Department of Energy said. Total U.S. coal production in 1992, including lignite and Pennsylvania anthracite, was 984.2 million tons, or 1 percent below 1991 levels. The number of rail cars loaded with coal last year was 6,320,685 or 2.8 percent fewer than a year earlier.
George Mason Bankshares Inc. has reported a 1992 profit of $2.9 million, up 21 percent from $2.4 million a year earlier. The Fairfax-based company, parent of George Mason Bank, did not provide per-share comparisons or fourth-quarter results. George Mason Bankshares had $320 million in assets on Dec. 31, 1992.
