STAMPER EXECUTION STAY DENIED
A Henrico County judge and a federal judge on Friday refused to postpone Charles Stamper's scheduled execution.Stamper's attorneys asked Henrico County Circuit Judge L.A. Harris Jr. to delay the execution, scheduled for Tuesday. They said Gov. Douglas Wilder had not complied with state law when he stayed Stamper's execution on Oct. 22 - six days before Stamper was scheduled to die in the electric chair.
They argued that Wilder violated the law when he did not set a specific expiration date in the order. Wilder delayed the execution so doctors could evaluate the inmate's medical condition.
Harris ruled that Wilder complied with the law.
Stamper was sentenced to death in Henrico County for the 1978 slayings of three restaurant workers during a robbery. - Associated Press
