POLL: 4 IN 5 EXPECT TAXES TO RISE UNDER CLINTON
Eighty percent of Americans expect President-elect Clinton to raise their taxes after he takes office, but if that happens, a majority thinks he will do so in a way that's fair, a poll released Saturday shows. Most Americans favor a tax increase if the money is used to make health insurance available to more people or to provide job training for the unemployed, the survey found.
The poll taken Wednesday and Thursday for Time magazine and Cable News Network found more preference for a national sales tax (43 percent) than for an increase in the gas tax (31 percent) or income tax (18 percent).
Another poll, taken for U.S. News and World Report, found 69 percent of Americans having a favorable opinion of Clinton.
