BRISTOL GETS $240,000 AS PARTIAL SETTLEMENT
Federal authorities have awarded the city of Bristol nearly $240,000 as a partial settlement in an embezzlement case involving the late Sheriff Marshall Honaker.Assistant U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson on Friday presented city officials four checks totaling $239,450.70 at the U.S. attorney's office in Abingdon.
The funds represent most of the liquidated assets of the estate of Honaker, who committed suicide during a federal investigation into charges he embezzled money from the city.
Authorities estimate $750,000 was diverted from the city. Honaker was never charged in the case.
The total represents such liquidated items as an automobile, a checking account, certificates of deposit and cash found in Honaker's office at the time of his death on Jan. 22, 1992.
When all assets are liquidated, the city can collect up to $515,000 under an agreement between City Council and federal authorities. Yet to be liquidated are Honaker's former home, jewelry and coin collections.
