BLUE RIDGE TEAMS FEAST ON NEW RIVER

If you noticed all those great won-lost records by four Blue Ridge District basketball teams, credit them to the New River District.

In the rivalry between the two leagues, there's never been such a wide gap. The Blue Ridge has swept all 13 games between the districts.

The average difference in the scores has been a whopping 24.3 points a game. The only close game, if that's what it can be called, came early in the season when Alleghany beat Blacksburg 62-52. All other games have been decided by more than 10 points, with the widest margin coming when Salem beat Radford 104-64.

The Blue Ridge also is 6-0 against the Group AAA Roanoke Valley District with the average difference of scores 10 points.

Overall, the Blue Ridge is 40-11 outside the league. However, Lord Botetourt and Rockbridge County, which are inexperienced teams, have played a lot of Group A and private schools.

\ CHANGES: A couple of key Blue Ridge District boys' basketball games are being moved to bigger arenas.

Salem is moving its Feb. 9 game against William Byrd to the Salem Civic Center where the Blue Ridge District tournament will be held next month.

Salem coach Charlie Morgan also is toying with the idea of trying some kind of Christmas tournament, possibly as early as next season at the Salem Civic Center, just as his successor, Len Mosser, did in 1989 and 1990.

The Jan. 29 Northside-Alleghany game is being switched from the Mountaineers' court to Dabney-Lancaster in Clifton Forge. Earlier, Alleghany played Covington on that floor.

\ ALL-STATE: During the rush of the all-state football teams selected by the coaches last month, the private school all-state team never reached the newspaper.

North Cross, the runner-up in the Division I state tournament, did very well with seven first-team choices. On offense, the Raiders were represented by quarterback Hal Johnson, running back Marcus Cardwell and linemen Brad Carroll and Chad Coyne. The Raiders picked on the defensive first team were linebacker Aaron Lange, lineman Ryan Shaver and punter Eric Mull.

North Cross' second-team selections were Monty Smith (kick returner and linebacker), Cardwell (defensive back) and Jason Davis (defensive line).
