HEART DISEASE COSTS TO TOP $117 BILLION

Heart disease and strokes will cost the United States $117.4 billion this year in treatment and lost productivity, the American Heart Association reported Sunday in its annual tally of heart disease statistics.

Heart disease remains the nation's leading killer, claiming 930,477 lives in 1990, the latest year for which figures are available, the heart association said.

The heart association estimated that heart disease would cost the nation $75.2 billion this year in hospital and nursing home services alone. Fees for doctors and nurses will total $17.9 billion and $6.7 billion will be spent on drugs.

The value of workers' productivity lost because of heart disease will be $17.6 billion, the heart association estimated.
