MAKE A PERSONAL EFFORT TO SAVE PLANET

BRAVO TO Viki Farmakis for her letter to the editor published Jan. 9, "No. 1 resolution: Save the planet." May I add a few suggestions?

It's easy to talk recycle, reuse and conserve, but what can each of us do right now to help out?

Purchase a reusable cup with a top and keep it with you for your coffee, soda, etc., instead of the paper or plastic that is offered.

Carry plastic grocery-style bags with you for your food or nonfood shopping. Several can easily fit into your purse or a small container in the car. Better yet, refuse a bag when you can, and just take the receipt. (Be sure to say "no bag," or "I have my own" before the store employee automatically stuffs it in.)

Pack lunches for adults and children into reusable plastic containers, rather than foil or plastic wrap. Save leftovers the same way.

Use cloth napkins instead of paper.

When you can, take advantage of the least expensive and cleanest clothes dryer available - the sun. Using a clothes line can actually be a pleasant experience - and make a tremendous difference in your utility bills.

All of these take a little extra effort, but a little from all of us could make a big difference in the grand scheme of things. Don't wait for "them" to do it. We are "them," and it's time for each of us to do our share. CATHY JACOBS BLACKSBURG
