HOLIDAY CELEBRATES LIFE OF KING

Today celebrates the life of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Born on Jan. 15, 1929, this clergyman and political leader became well-known in the 1950s and '60s for leading non-violent marches and protests in the South.

This is the seventh year Martin Luther King Jr. day has been celebrated as a federal holiday. It's also a paid holiday in every state, except for New Hampshire.

In 1963 King and others marched to Washington, D.C., for a mass rally. There he made his famous "I have a dream" speech. The next year he received the Nobel Peace Prize.

In 1968 he was shot and killed by James Earl Ray in a hotel in Memphis, Tenn.

King's hope, indeed his dream, was to end discrimination against blacks and other minorities.

This is part of his famous "dream" speech:

"I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: `We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.' I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
