TEACHER OF THE WEEK
From Paris to Pompeii, from Sydney to Switzerland, the pupils in Betty McManaway's Roanoke County classroom have seen the world."I've found my students want to know more about other places. They're not just interested in the community in which they live," says McManaway. An avid traveler, McManaway shares her experiences in foreign lands with her pupils. She brings in pictures and encourages her pupils to read about places they've never been.
McManaway has taught for 26 years at Mountain View. As language arts coordinator, she gives advanced instruction to pupils in first- through sixth-grade. "She believes in her students and enjoys helping them learn. She wants her students to accept responsibility and enjoy her class at the same time," said the pupil who nominated her.
A cat lover (she has 10), McManaway likes traveling, bridge and crafts. Her daughter is an architect in Colorado, and her son, is a physician in Pennsylvania. She has three granddaughters.
