GOP HOPEFULS' 5-DEBATE SERIES BEGINS FRIDAY
The three Republican gubernatorial candidates have agreed to a schedule of five debates in January and February, the campaigns announced Monday.Representatives of former Rep. George Allen of Charlottesville, Del. Clinton Miller of Shenandoah, and Earle Williams of McLean have been working out details of the intraparty debates for a week.
The debates start Friday in Great Falls in Fairfax County, at a private home. They continue in February, when the candidates have agreed to four meetings in six days: Feb. 10 in Virginia Beach, Feb. 12 in Richmond, Feb. 13 in Bristol and Feb. 16 in Fredericksburg. Exact sites and times of those debates will be announced later, the campaigns said in a joint statement.
The debates are expected to have a format similar to the one used in the candidates' first formal debate last week in Augusta County: Opening statements followed by the candidates answering questions from the audience and reporters. - Richmond bureau
