RADFORD FALLS SHORT OF BULLDOGS 72-69
Willie Black sank two free throws with 14 seconds left as North Carolina- Asheville held off Radford for a 72-69 Big South Conference basketball victory Monday night.Black ignited a second-half rally that helped the Bulldogs (3-8 overall, 1-3 Big South) erase a 55-40 deficit. His two free throws with 6:30 remaining gave UNCA a 59-58 lead.
The Bulldogs stretched the lead to 69-65 on Mario Joyner's jumper with 36 seconds remaining, but the Highlanders (8-9, 2-2) rallied. Brian Schmall sank a free throw with 25 seconds left for Radford, but David Jackson came back with a free throw with 24 seconds left to give UNCA a 70-66 edge.
Don Burgess made a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left to get Radford to 70-69. Black was fouled and sank the free throws, and Schmall's 3-point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the rim.
Jackson had a career-high 25 points for the Bulldogs. Burgess scored 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor for Radford. Schmall has 12 points and 10 assists.
In other state games:
\ James Madison 102, Old Dominion 89: At Harrisonburg, William Davis scored 27 points and Bryan Edwards added 23 as the Dukes (11-4) improved to 4-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association with a victory over the Monarchs.
Old Dominion (8-5, 2-2), which defeated James Madison for last season's CAA championship, was led by Odell Hodge, the former Laurel Park High standout, with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
\ East Carolina 68, George Mason 64: At Greenville, N.C., Anton Gill scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Pirates (5-8, 1-3) hit 75 percent of their field goals in the second half and held off the Patriots (5-11, 0-4).
Derek Shackleford's 3-point shot with 22 seconds to play brought George Mason to 66-64, but, after a timeout, he fouled Gill, who sank two free throws to secure the victory.
\ Randolph-Macon 54, Virginia Wesleyan 49: At Ashland, Troy Smith scored 17 points and the Yellow Jackets held the Marlins scoreless for nearly seven minutes down the stretch for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory. The Yellow Jackets (7-5, 3-3) also got 12 points from Kurt Axe and 11 from Jason Grubb. Walt Lassiter led Virginia Wesleyan (10-3, 6-1) with 18 points.
\ Liberty 70, Campbell 50: At Buies Creek, N.C., Jody Chapman scored all seven of his points in a decisive 23-5 run and Eric Pothoven made all nine of his free throws down the stretch as the Flames (7-7, 2-2) beat the Camels (3-8, 1-2) in the Big South.
\ Gardner-Webb 69, Longwood 67: At Farmville, Jerry Chollette scored 15 points and Gardner-Webb held off a late rally from the Lancers. Gardner-Webb (7-6) snapped the four-game winning streak of Longwood (8-7).
\ Queens, N.C. 89, Averett 50: At Danville, Todd Schmid scored 19 points as Queens (11-4) rolled to a victory over Averett, the Cougars' 11th loss in 13 games this season.
\ Virginia Western CC 106, New River CC 68: At Pulaski, Chris Byington scored 19 to lead 11 scorers in the balanced attack by Blue Stars (3-3). John Wade and Mike Worrell each had 22 in New River's first game.
\ Women
\ Virginia Tech 85, Southern Mississippi 70: At Blacksburg, the Hokies moved into first place alone in the Metro Conference with the convincing victory over the Golden Eagles in Cassell Coliseum. Tech is 11-3 overall, 3-0 in the Metro, one game in front of Southern Miss (11-2, 2-1).
Five Tech starters scored in double figures, led by Lisa Griffith with 19 points, Lisa Leftwich with 17 and Sue Logsdon with 16.
\ N.C. Wesleyan 57, Ferrum 49: At Rocky Mount, N.C., Kathleen Hakenson scored 11 points as the Battlin' Bishops rallied to beat the Panthers in a Dixie Conference game. Sarah Quesenberry scored 19 points for Ferrum (5-8, 1-1) and Dana Bowman added 12.
\ Radford 79, N.C.-Asheville 57: At Radford's Dedmon Center, Shannan Wilkey scored 19 points and Samantha Gilbert added 15 as the Highlanders (4-6, 2-2) won their second straight Big South Conference game by beating the winless Bulldogs (0-11, 0-5).
