OBIT WADE, L. GRADY

WADE, L. Grady, 72, of McLean, died Friday, January 15, 1993, of a heart ailment at Arlington Hospital. He was a retired Arlington elementary school principal. A life-long resident of Virginia, he was born in Gate City, Virginia, and grew up in Hillsville, Virginia. He began teaching at the age of 19 in the Carroll County Schools. He taught at Oak Grove in 1940, Mt. Tabor in 1941 and at Hillsville High School from 1945 to 1952. He transferred to the Arlington Public Schools in 1952 where he taught at Cherrydale & McKinley Schools. He served as principal of Madison Elementary School (1956-66) and at Nottingham Elementary School from 1966 until his retirement in 1978. He was a 40-year resident of Arlington and McLean. He served on the staff of George Washington University and at the University of Virginia where he taught science courses for teachers. He was active in the Carroll County Education Association, the Arlington Education Association, the Virginia Education Association, the Arlington Retired Teachers Association and the Arlington School Administrators Association. He was a former board member of the Arlington Outdoor Education Association. He was a founder of Encore! Encore! a senior citizen magazine and co-editor at the time of his death. He was a writer of children's books and magazine articles. Mr. Wade attended Emory & Henry College, and received the B.S. degree from Greenville College (Illinois), and M.A. degree from Columbia University. He also studied at the George Washington University and the University of Virginia. He was a communications specialist during World War II, serving in England with the 13th Bomb Wing Headquarters, 3rd Air Division, U.S. 8th Air Force. He is survived by three sisters, Linda McGuire, Hillsville, Betty Mabry, Pembroke, Helen Barnes, Reidsville, N.C.; three brothers, William Wade and Waverly Wade, both of Hillsville, Jack Wade, Cana; two long supporting friends, George Alleman, McLean, Seymour Stiss, Arlington; a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 24, 1993, at 1 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville, with the Rev. James Carpenter officiating. Interment will follow in the Gardner Memorial Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Hillsville VFW Post #1115.
