SCC sets hearing on Apco rate requestThe State Corporation Commission has scheduled a public hearing on May 18 at 10 a.m. on Appalachian Power Co.'s request for a 5.5 percent rate increase. The request would generate $31.4 million in annual revenues for the utility and increase the average residential customer's bill $4.05 a month.
Apco will be allowed to begin charging the higher rate on May 4 on an interim basis, subject to a refund if the SCC does not approve the entire request.
The hearing will be held in the SCC's second-floor courtroom in the Tyler Building, 1300 E. Main St., Richmond.
Anyone who wants to testify should arrive 15 minutes before the hearing begins. Written comments may be sent by April 13 to the SCC clerk, Document Control Center, P.O. Box 2118, Richmond 23216. Comments should refer to case number PUE920081.
Waste Management wants name change
Waste Management Inc., an Oak Brook, Ill.-company with operations in Western Virginia, said Monday its board of directors has approved a proposal to change the company's name to WMX Technologies Inc.
The proposal will be submitted to stockholders at the May 14 annual meeting. The company said it intends to retain the name Waste Management Inc. for its North American solid-waste operations.
The proposed name is to reflect the broader and increasingly more technological nature of its environmental services, Waste Management said.
