OBIT LAY, W.

LAY, Wood W., 82, of Coeburn, died Monday, January 18, 1993, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon after a brief illness. He was a man of a fine sense of responsibility. He was always faithful to every obligation, true to his friends and unfailingly supportive of his family. Mr. Lay operated Lay's Hardware & Furniture Company for over 60 years. He was a founder of the Farmers Exchange Bank of Coeburn, and served as its president for more than 30 years. He served on the Board of Directors of Sovran Bank, Tom's Creek Development Corporation and Lamplighters Development Corporation; and was the first president of Clinch Valley Manor Nursing Home in Wise. He served four terms on the Coeburn Town Council, and served for many years on the Wise County electoral board. His early education was at Fork Union Military Academy, and he was also a graduate of Roanoke Business College. He was a lifelong, active member and trustee of the First Baptist Church of Coeburn. Survivors include his wife, Agnes Kiser Lay of the home; and three sons, Wood N. Lay of Spartanburg, S.C., Donald E. Lay of Abingdon, Jeffrey G. Kiser of Norton. He is also survived by four grandchildren. Graveside services for family and friends will be at noon on Thursday, January 21, 1993, at Mountain View Cemetery, Valley Drive, Bristol, Va., with the Rev. Bill Johnson officiating. The graveside procession will leave Estes Funeral Home in Coeburn at 10:30 a.m. The family will receive friends at Estes Funeral Home in Coeburn from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20, 1993. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the First Baptist Church of Coeburn or to a church of choice. Estes Funeral Home, Inc. in Coeburn is in charge of arrangements.
