WALTER LOEBL DIES; HEADED DYE WORKS
Walter S. Loebl, retired president of the old Loebl Cleaners and Dye Works on Salem Avenue, died Monday in a Roanoke hospital. He was 84.His father, Josef Loebl, came from Vienna, Austria, to start the business in 1925 and the company continued until about 1980. For years, every presidential family in the White House sent clothes to the Loebls for dyeing. The company once dyed up to 600,000 garments a year, including government parachutes, tuxedos and White House napkins.
Loebl once was president of the Garment Dyers Guild of America. His brother, Robert, a partner in the firm, died in 1981.
Walter Loebl was a past president of the Big Lick Stamp Club and of Israel Friedlander Lodge No. 877 of B'nai B'rith in Roanoke. He was a captain in the U.S. Army in World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Tina Loebl; two sons, Richard Loebl, Huntington Woods, Mich., Fred Loebl, Berkeley, Calif., and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be today at noon at Temple Emanuel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Temple Emanuel.
Arrangements are by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
