Childhood education

Greenvale School's Early Childhood Education Workshops and Traning Sessions will kick off today with five sessions running through April 21.

The free sessions will be held at the school on 627 Westwood Blvd. N.W., Roanoke.

The first session is from 12:30-2:15 p.m. and is titled "Teachable moments/talking about the body." Joan Luebbers of Southern Illinois University discusses how to provide young children with age-appropriate information and how to establish guidelines for acceptable and unacceptable behavior.

Feb. 6 is the second session, from 9 a.m.-noon. with Katie Highfill and Sandra Whitt discussing "Theme-based integrated reading and language arts activities." The librarian and art educator demonstrate both subjects with books, puppets, props, storytelling techniques and other manipulative educational products.

On Feb. 17 from 12:30-2:15 p.m. Peggy Harrelson, an early childhood specialist from the Virginia Council on Child Day Care and Early Childhood Programs talks about "Early childhood program issues: Program quality, parent/teacher communications and teacher-made materials for 3-year-olds."

The fourth session is March 3 from 12:30-2:15 p.m. Susan Rieves, a prevention specialist with Mental Health Services of Roanoke Valley leads the workshop titled "Let's discuss the difficult child." The presentation will be an open discussion about classroom problems what new approaches are working.

The series of workshop ends April 21 from 12:30-2:15 p.m. when educators Gayle Earley and Vernie Strouth discuss "Implementing classroom learning centers." The sessions will demonstrate how to create safe educational environments focused on individual learning experiences in the classroom.

Alabama bus service

Shuttle bus service will be provided to the Alabama concert Friday night at 8 at the Roanoke Civic Center.

Buses will make round trips from the Williamson Road Parking Garage (Williamson and Franklin roads) beginning at 6:30 p.m. and immediately following the concert.

Shuttle service and parking in the garage is free. Off-street parking will be available around the civic center complex.

`Umbrellas' in Radford

World-renowned artist Christo will give a slide lecture on two of his works, "The Umbrellas: Japan-U.S.A., 1984-91" and "Wrapper Reichstag, Project for Berlin," on Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. at Radford University's Preston Auditorium.
