AUBURN PRESSURES GREEN WAVE 93-65
Balanced scoring and pressure defense carried Auburn to a 93-65 Mountain Empire District boys' basketball victory Tuesday night over Narrows.The Eagles had four players with 15 or more points: Andy Johnson with 17, Terry Millirons with 17, Gerald Reed with 17 and Bradley Hudgins with 15.
Auburn (7-5, 5-4) forced Narrows into 31 turnovers and bolted to a 49-28 lead at halftime.
Chad Fleeman led Narrows (5-5, 4-4) with 17 points.
\ Carroll County 75\ Graham 70
HILLSVILLE - Graham rallied to force overtime, but the Cavaliers prevailed in the non-district game.
G-Man Fred Adams sank a 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining to finish a 31-20 quarter and force overtime at 68-68. However, Carroll County (5-9) scored four points quickly and won the extra period 7-2.
John Wolford led the Cavaliers with 22 points. Stephen Dalton added 17 and Jason Kilbourne 13. Jay Gray had 24 and Adams 22 for Graham.
\ Bland 61\ Shawsville 50
BLAND - The Rockets outscored the Shawnees 18-9 in the fourth quarter to notch a Mountain Empire District victory.
Bland (7-4, 5-4) converted nine of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to win going away. David Lambert had 13 points, Jes Selfe 12, Brad Harden 11 and Chris Tickle 10 for the Rockets, who played most of the game without leading scorer Kevin King, who was injured in the first quarter.
Shawsville (2-10, 1-8) got 18 points from Keith Martin.
\ Floyd County 79\ Rocky Gap 31
ROCKY GAP - The Buffaloes rolled to an easy Mountain Empire District win as winless Rocky Gap played its first game under Charles Puckett, the Eagles' former coach who has returned on an interim basis.
Gap coach Rick Donithan resigned Monday because of health problems, assistant coach Clay Neal said. Puckett's return was a struggle, as Floyd County (6-2, 6-2) roared to a 44-14 halftime lead.
Jason Light paced Floyd with 17 points. The Eagles (0-10, 0-9) were led by Joe Cromer's nine points.
\ Galax 68\ Giles 51
PEARISBURG - The Maroon Tide scored 18 straight points in the first half to take control of a Mountain Empire District game.
Galax (7-2, 6-1) turned a 15-12 deficit into a 30-15 lead with its scoring spurt. Jeff Spells led the winners with 31 points. The Maroon Tide also converted 15 of 20 free throws.
Giles (2-7, 2-6) got 15 points from Patrick Steele and 14 from Mitch Reed.
\ Gateway Christian 78\ Stanleytown Baptist 55
BASSETT - The Crusaders outscored Stanleytown 27-10 in the third quarter to take control of a non-district game.
David Arthur had 20 points and Sam Moore added 19 for Gateway Christian (6-1), which opened the second half with a full-court press that created turnovers and easy shots.
Stanleytown Baptist got 23 points from Vincent Gravely and 16 from Greg Wesley.
\ Oak Hill 92\ Charlotte Christian 50
MOUTH OF WILSON - Jerry Stackhouse scored 27 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and had eight assists as the Warriors blew past Charlotte (N.C.) Christian for their 19th straight victory.
Jeff McInnis paced Oak Hill (19-0) with 17 points, including three 3-point goals and 10 assists. Teammate Makhtar Ngiaye had 14 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks.
\ Jefferson Forest 85\ William Campbell 57
FOREST - Ryan Gilleland scored 24 points as the Cavaliers pummeled the Generals for a Seminole District win.
Gilleland scored three 3-pointers in the first quarter as Jefferson Forest (8-4, 8-4) ran up a 42-26 halftime lead and never looked back.
Jason Callahan led William Campbell (1-11, 1-11) with 17 points.
\ Amherst County 56\ Staunton River 51
AMHERST - Justin Johannes scored 12 points, Eric Thomas had 11 and Chuck Gardner 10 as the Lancers won a Seminole District game.
Staunton River got 17 points from Roger Thomas and 16 from Mike Moon. The Golden Eagles (5-7, 5-7) played without Eric Flood, who averages 18 points and eight rebounds. Flood suffered a foot injury Friday night.
Amherst is 9-2, 9-2.
