RAMPAGE SLIDE REACHES 14
This was no hockey game. This was Truth or Dare on ice, Name That Tune with a hockey puck.We can score four goals in 8:49 of the second period, the Roanoke Valley Rampage said.
Fine, answered the Greensboro Monarchs. We'll do it in 6:04 of the third period - and beat you 6-4 in the process.
With backup goalie Greg Menges in the net for over half the game, the Monarchs (22-17) staggered to a 4-1 deficit Tuesday at Greensboro Coliseum.
At 7:36 of the third period, even after starter Bill Horn had replaced Menges, the three-goal margin stood. Roanoke Valley (10-29) looked likely to break its 13-game losing streak.
Then Dave Burke broke Greensboro's 40-minute scoring drought by smoking a knee-high shot goalward - and under leaping teammate Brent Fleetwood - from 25 feet away. Still 4-2 Rampage with 12:23 left.
Then Phil Berger showed a glimpse of the skills that made him the East Coast Hockey League's most valuable player last year. Berger's backhanded shot with a rebound at 11:02 closed the gap to 4-3. One minute and 28 seconds later, he tied the game with a short shot off a slick left-to-right move.
The rest was almost academic. Craig Herr scored the eventual winner from the right side at 13:41. Wayne Muir made it 6-4 Monarchs at 17:02, leaving Greensboro almost three minutes to bask in a most unlikely win.
"We played so horrible the second period," Herr said. " . . . We knew we were the better team. Once we got the first goal, it snowballed. We thought that would happen."
