EARLY SPURT LIFTS COLONELS

William Fleming scored the game's first 22 points and rolled to a 69-40 romp over Heritage in a boys' non-district basketball game Tuesday night.

The Colonels (9-2) pulled out to the huge lead behind Carlos Rhodes, who scored 11 of his game-high 18 points in the first quarter. Rhodes' scoring spree included three 3-pointers.

Heritage (5-8) went 7:48 without a point before Brandon Phillips scored on a offensive rebound.

Visiting E.C. Glass rallied to take the lead in the final minutes in a non-district win over the Patriots.

Terrence Charlton led the Hilltoppers (5-10) with 18 points and Chris Tunkel had 14. Patrick Henry (1-11) got 13 points each from Chris Boyd and Ben Johnson, and 11 from Maurice Preston.

BUENA VISTA - Brad Melton scored a game-high 20 points as the Highlanders remained unbeaten inside the Pioneer District.

Jason Woolwine and Jason Anderson added 17 points each for Glenvar (9-3, 5-0), which led virtually all the way.

Nathan Baker paced the Fighting Blues (6-4, 2-3) with 11 points.

Mike Kolnok scored 18 points and Roanoke Catholic had 17 steals in a Virginia Independent Conference win.

Tony Williams added 12 points, Jemarh Patterson 11 and Josh Taylor 10 for the Celtics (4-13, 2-3). Andrew Tunnell led Carlisle (1-13, 0-7) with 16.

NEW CASTLE - Robbie Huffman made the first shot of a one-and-one with four seconds remaining to lift the Rockets to a Pioneer District win.

Huffman finished with three 3-pointers and 15 points. Kevin Lucas added four 3-pointers and 14 points for Craig County (6-6, 1-3). Mike Reese led the Chargers (6-7, 2-2) with 11.

Senior forward Marqueetta Randolph erupted for a career-best 39 points, leading the Colonels to the Roanoke Valley District win.

Randolph, who entered the game averaging 22 points, surpassed her previous career high of 31. Kelly Irving had 10 points and six assists for Fleming (8-3, 3-2), which led by 26-6 after one quarter. Carrie Moore led the Patriots (1-12, 0-7). \

The Raiders were up 21-20 after the third quarter, but poor free-throw shooting helped the Tornadoes rally to a Blue Ridge Conference victory.

Timberlake (5-7, 2-3) made nine of 14 from the line in the fourth quarter, while North Cross (2-8, 0-5) was 2-of-8.

Angie Coleman led the Tornadoes with 17 points. For the Raiders, Kathryn Anthony scored 11. \
