CAVALIERS UPSET WARRIORS
At Ridgeway, Lemuel Jones scored 25 points and Thad Wade added 21 as Fieldale-Collinsville upset Magna Vista 79-77 in overtime for the Piedmont District boys' basketball victory Tuesday night.Magna Vista slowed the pace of the game in the first half and took a 36-31 halftime lead. Fieldale-Collinsville (8-5, 6-4) rallied in the second half, but Cavalier Rodney Redd sank a driving layup with four seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Magna Vista had a one-point lead in overtime when Warrior Keith Hodge missed the first shot of a one-and-one. Wade pulled down the rebound and put up the winning shot with time running out.
Redd paced the Cavaliers (7-4, 7-3) with 21 points. Marcus Toney, Rodney Tanks and Tony Holmes added 15 each. \
Tunstall 87, Martinsville 85: At Dry Fork, Chris Walton doubled his season scoring average with a career-high 28 points as the Trojans upset the state's seventh-ranked Group AA team in Piedmont District play.
Tunstall (8-5 overall, 6-4 Piedmont) held a four-point lead with three minutes left, and the Bulldogs started fouling Trojans' guard Khris Law. He made six of seven free-throw attempts in the final minutes.
The 6-foot-4 Walton scored 28 points while Law added 27, with four blocked shots and five assists. Tarrace Carter, Tunstall's 6-5 senior center, had 19 points, 16 rebounds, five blocks and four steals.
Martinsville (10-2, 8-2) dropped two games behind top-ranked Laurel Park in the Piedmont race despite 20 points apiece from Mike Martin and Maurice Spencer. \
Laurel Park 88, Dan River 50: At Ringgold, Ronnie Jackson's 18 points led the way as the unbeaten Lancers overwhelmed the outmanned Wildcats in the Piedmont District game.
Hot-shooting Laurel Park (12-0, 10-0) scored 55 points in the first half in building a 34-point cushion. Lonzie Robertson and Carlos Cooke added 14 points apiece for the winners.
Brian Gunn's 19 points paced Dan River (4-9, 3-7). \
Northwood 65, Chilhowie 60: At Saltville, John Griffin scored 26 points as the Panthers ran past the Warriors for a Hogoheegee District victory.
Griffin scored 11 points in the first quarter as Northwood jumped to a 17-7 lead. Chilhowie rallied, but Neal Booth sank three of his four 3-pointers in the third quarter and Griffin scored eight points in the fourth to give the Panthers the win.
Booth paced Northwood (8-3, 6-1) with 18 points. Tim Polk led Chilhowie (6-5, 3-4) with 20 points. \
Chatham 63, Gretna 48: At Chatham, LaVelton Pope scored 17 points and Ben Wright and Theo Jones added 14 apiece as the Cavaliers handed the Hawks their 11th loss.
Size was the key. Pope, a 6-4 forward, pulled down 12 rebounds and Wright, a 6-3 center, had 10 rebounds as Chatham (5-7, 5-5) outrebounded Gretna 38-16 on the way to the Piedmont District win.
Jeff Moon led the Hawks (1-11, 1-9) with 17 points. \
Covington 87, Highland 61: At Monterey, the Rams cut its deficit to 10 points in the third quarter, but Covington roared away again for a Pioneer District road victory.
The Cougars (5-5, 3-1) were led by Van Wallace's 21 points, while Keena Jones added 16. Highland (2-7, 0-4) got 19 points from John Colaw and 17 from Chris Schill. \
