CAT-LICENSE SALES TO BEGIN IN WYTHEVILLE
Licenses for cats will go on sale in the Wytheville treasurer's office Feb. 1 for cats over 4 months old.Licenses are $4 for neutered cats and $6 for others. After Feb. 28, it will be against the law for any unlicensed cat to roam at large, although cats kept at a farm, veterinary hospital or laboratory are not required to be licensed.
To get a license, owners must show a certificate that the cat has been vaccinated against rabies. Other information required is a description of the cat and whether it has been spayed or neutered.
Cat owners will get a license and metal tag. The license must be presented to get the cat back if it is picked up. The tag can be placed on a cat's collar but is not required, since some cats will not wear collars.
Wytheville Town Council approved the ordinance last year after complaints from residents of property damage from cats running at large.
The ordinance underwent a number of revisions and drew large crowds at several council meetings before the present version was finally approved. Mayor Trent Crewe said the ordinance generated more crowds than any issue he can remember coming before council.
