GILES OUTLASTS DEMONS
With five seconds left in the second overtime, Mitch Reed drove the baseline for a basket that gave Giles a 56-55 victory over Christiansburg in non-district boys' basketball on Wednesday night.Each team had a chance late in regulation. Giles (3-7) turned over the ball on a traveling call with three seconds left, and Christiansburg's long 3-point heave missed.
In the first overtime, each team scored seven points. Giles led 51-49 as time wound down and Christiansburg (1-11) lofted an airball from 3-point land. The Demons' Rodney Perdue rebounded the ball in the air and put in a two-point basket at the buzzer the tied the score again, 51-51.
Christiansburg led 55-54 in the second overtime when Reed drove for his winning basket. Christiansburg inbounded the ball, and Robby Gillenwater's desperation 3-pointer missed.
Rusty Newby led the Spartans with 15 points, Patrick Steele had 13 and Reed added eight.
For Christiansburg, John Hairston had 15 points and Tony Bishop added 11.
