YMCA Camp Cheerio plans summer sessionsYMCA Camp Cheerio in the North Carolina mountains is accepting registration for this summer's programs for boys and girls.
One- and two-week sessions in traditional camp for ages 8-15 will be offered, featuring basketball and soccer specialties. Adventure camp for ages 12 1/2-15 will include an Outer Banks bicycle tour and an advanced backpack, canoe and rock-climbing trip.

Roanoke dog license deadline is Jan. 31
Jan. 31 is the deadline for Roanoke residents to license their dogs for 1993.
A city ordinance requires the owner of any dog 4 months old or older to pay a license fee. Fees are $10 for each female dog, $7.50 for each male dog and $5 for each spayed or neutered dog. Guide dogs for the blind or deaf are exempted from fees.
Licenses must be purchased at the City Treasurer's Office at 215 Church Ave. S.W. Proof of current rabies vaccination is required for each dog.
City Council passed an ordinance last year requiring the owner of any animal impounded by city animal control officers to pay impoundment and boarding fees before the animal may be released.
City restaurants win Silver Spoon awards
The Roanoke Health Department has announced the winners in its Silver Spoon awards for restaurant cleanliness.
The Roanoke Weiner Stand No. 1 on the City Market won the top award in the short-order division. Honorable mentions in the short-order category went to Kentucky Fried Chicken on Melrose Avenue, Pizza Hut Delivery on Williamson Road and Burger King on Franklin Road.
D.J.'s Brasserie on Duke of Gloucester Street won top honors in the the full-service category. Honorable mentions in that category went to the Roanoke Airport Marriott, Alexander's on Jefferson Street and the New Yorker on Williamson Road.
Health officials based their selections on overall inspection scores during the past year, along with management's attitude and willingness to correct violations quickly.
4-H club schedules talent show tryouts
Roanoke Valley 4-H Club Talent Competition tryouts will be held Feb. 16 from 6-8 p.m. at Hollins College's Talmadge Hall.
The talent show, sponsored by the 4-H Media and Performing Arts Program, will be held Feb. 27 in Talmadge Hall. Vocal, instrumental, variety and dance performances may be given.
Tryouts are open to all Roanoke Valley youth ages 9-19. Those interested should call the Roanoke 4-H office at 857-7915.
Volunteers needed to help Asian refugees
The Roanoke office of Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services needs volunteers to help newly arriving families from Southeast Asia get settled in the Roanoke Valley.
The families will need help with getting driver's licenses, finding their way around, comparison shopping and other tasks of daily life.
Tutors also are needed to teach conversational English. No teaching experience is required, and training and materials are provided. Tutoring schedules are flexible.
