FREEZING RAIN CAUSES WRECKS, CLOSES ROADS
Freezing rain on Wednesday formed a hazardous surface on roads and sidewalks in west-central Virginia, causing at least one fatality and more than 100 accidents.A woman was killed in a seven-vehicle accident in the early morning along westbound Interstate 64 east of Waynesboro, hospital officials and police said.
The name of the 29-year-old woman was not released pending notification of her relatives, said a spokesman for Augusta Hospital Corp., which operates Waynesboro Community Hospital and King's Daughters' Hospital in Staunton.
In Staunton, police reported at least 45 traffic accidents. At least 64 accidents in Charlottesville and the counties of Augusta and Rockingham injured six people, state police said.
Interstates 64 and 81 were closed in both directions near Afton Mountain by 9:20 a.m., state police Lt. Marshall Forrest said.
Police had reopened all highways by 11 a.m., authorities said.
