EX-DOCTOR ARRESTED AT OFFICE

William Gray, who surrendered his child-psychiatry license in order to avoid trial on charges of molesting young men, was arrested early Thursday on charges of interfering with Roanoke police.

Police said Gray was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. after he called police to report that someone was trying to break into his office at 310 Washington Ave. S.W.

When police arrived, several people at the house told them that Gray, 51, was locked in the kitchen. Police knocked on the door, but got no response.

Police left the house, but remained nearby as a precaution.

Shortly afterward, police said, a Cadillac owned by Gray backed out of the driveway, but pulled back in when police drove up to see who was in the car.

Police questioned two men in the car, and decided to give the driver a sobriety test. At that point, police said, Gray came out of the office and ordered police to get off his property. Officers say they told him to back away or he'd be arrested for interfering with police.

Gray initially went back into the office, but returned and was arrested when he refused to stay away, police said.

Gray spent part of the day in jail after he refused to be bonded out by a relative or be allowed to go free on his own promise to show up for a court hearing.

He was out of jail by Thursday night, however.

Gray's license to practice medicine was suspended last year by the state Board of Medicine because of allegations he misused his position as a doctor to force sex on young men.

He was scheduled to be tried this month on Franklin County charges of forcing sex on five young men. Gray consistently had denied the allegations.

Last week Franklin County prosecutors agreed to drop the charges in exchange for Gray's agreement to surrender forever his license to practice psychiatry or medicine in Virginia.
